Master Recyclers recently responded to a survey about what information would be most useful and one of the top answers was a regular refresh on the basics. So for this month, we are revisiting the top 17 questions we get asked just about every time we set up an information booth on recycling. Take the test. See how you do!
Westside Master Recyclers Meetings
West-side Master Recyclers and solid waste and recycling program staff from Washington County and City of Beaverton gathered the evening of August 20 for the first of new quarterly meetings. The gathering included a potluck, guest speaker and Master Recycler Cecelia Warner from the Forest Grove Farmer’s Market, recognition of recent Master Recycler milestones, updates on recycling and events and a mixer activity. Many classes were represented including as far back as Class 25. The next meeting will be in November at the new City of Beaverton offices. Appreciations
Master Recycler Reaches a New Milestone!
Cecelia Warner (Class 47) accomplished something no one else has accomplished. She completed 1,000 volunteer hours!
Cecelia has been recognized many times in the community for her amazing energy, enthusiasm and accomplishments. She has promoted sustainable living through the Forest Grove Greens, presented to students at Hillsboro High and Pacific College and influenced policy by presenting to the Forest Grove Sustainability Advisory Committee.
But most of the time you will find Cecelia at the Forest Grove Farmer's Market. There she found a place for just about every waste stream: pig farmers for the compost; durable dishes and napkins for the food vendors; and created the Waste Center where Master Recyclers staff an information booth and collect plastics, Styrofoamtm and other non-curbside recycling.
We have a pin for Centurions and Quincenturions, but had to come up with something special for someone who has completed 1,000 hours.So we are sending Cecelia her very own vanity license plate frame so that she can proudly share that she is a Master Recycler.
Perhaps we will have a fleet of these soon!
Certified Master Recyclers
Thanks to the Master Recyclers who completed their commitment of 30 hours of payback!
Sue Hein (Class 53) offered recycling, building salvage and composting education at events from Milwaukie, Oregon City and Gresham. She also participated in some great recycling events including two years of the Mt. Hood Green Scene and Down the River Cleanup on the Clackamas.

Lori Haney is the second person from Class 59 to become a Certified Master Recycler! Lori promoted recycling, toxics reduction and food waste prevention at the Oregon City, West Linn and Gresham Farmer's Markets. She even stood through 102 degree weather at the event in Gresham.
Jim Patton (Class 49) seems to have caught the repair bug. He was at each of the Westside Repair Fairs and has been promoting the fairs at the Beaverton Farmer's Market. Of course, building and salvage reuse has been a favorite topic for some time. He started out his 30 volunteer hours at several trade shows promoting The ReBuilding Center.
Celeste Aguilar (Class 58) is active in her own neighborhood by helping plan recycling at the Mt Scott-Arleta cleanup to offering a regular table at the Lents International Farmer's Market. She even invited folks to her home for an Eco-Party. And she isn't done yet! Celeste and fellow classmates will be at the Lents Market every 4th Sunday this summer.

Recycling Advocates' 2015 Annual Meeting

Guest speaker Representative Rob Nosse will talk about environmental successes from the last legislative session, including the bill banning Styrofoam from Oregon school lunchrooms. There will be plenty of time for socializing, networking, and sharing ideas on waste prevention, reuse and recycling. We'll also take a few minutes for elections to the Recycling Advocates board of directors.
