About the Position:

The City of Portland’s Bureau of Planning and Sustainability (BPS) is hiring a Youth & Schools Waste Reduction Coordinator to empower Portland’s diverse students and educators to reduce waste and adopt more sustainable practices. The Coordinator will engage students and staff through outreach and education, technical assistance, volunteer and leadership development, capacity building, and community partnership.  

Youth and schools value recycling and waste reduction but often need support given limited time and resources. This position will work with students, school districts (Portland Public Schools, David Douglas, Reynolds, Centennial, and Parkrose), community-based partners, and other school-related organizations to support recycling, food waste prevention and reduction, and waste prevention and reduction.


As a Youth Recycling and Waste Reduction Coordinator, you will:

  • Create and develop the youth/school components of the Solid Waste and Recycling team’s strategic plan focusing on equitable engagement, outreach, programs, and behavior change campaigns for students of color, students at all school levels, and school districts.

  • Manage BPS’ waste prevention efforts with elementary and secondary schools.

  • Build relationships and partner with school districts and their staff and educators, parents, community-based organizations, underrepresented communities, and youth organizations.

  • Plan and implement inclusive and equitable technical assistance, tools, presentations, age-appropriate and culturally relevant experiential learning, resources and education/outreach materials for waste prevention, reuse, repair-and-share, compost, food waste reduction, toxics reduction, thoughtful consumption practices.

  • Support youth volunteerism and leadership in sustainability.

  • Develop and maintain communication channels to reach school districts, teachers, school staff, parents, and students, with the resources and opportunities available. This could include social media, newsletters, print, presence in the community, presentations, and public events.

  • Coordinate and support volunteers and student interns for events and special projects or for integration with opportunities through school clubs, Master Recyclers, Eco-Schools, or Oregon Green Schools.

  • Collaborate and engage with Metro’s Education and Youth Leadership program and other local jurisdictions around existing regional youth programs and engagement efforts as well as representing BPS in the regional work group.

  • Track outreach and outcomes; reports and/or present on program plans and accomplishments; contribute to state and regional waste reduction reporting.

  • Work in partnership with the outreach and education team.

  • Manage contracts and grants, track and reconcile expenditures, and recommend annual budgetary needs.

  • Raise awareness of career pathways and leadership opportunities that promote sustainability and climate action.

Re-thinking how we use materials and manage waste is important to supporting the well-being and involvement of our community, addressing climate change, and protecting the critical natural systems that we and our economy depend upon.

The program includes three teams:

  • Policy: Develops, establishes, and strengthens policies, programs, and plans that 1) shape our community’s management and reduction of waste, and 2) increase recycling reuse, and sustainable consumption, while developing authentic relationships across Portland’s diverse communities.

  • Outreach, Education and Technical Assistance: Educates, engages, and delivers technical assistance on waste prevention, reuse, repair, toxics reduction, and sustainable consumption, growing partnerships and opportunities for participation.

 

All teams work in partnership with Portland’s diverse communities, community organizations, garbage and recycling companies, and other local governments.
