The Position

We're looking for a Recycling Specialist with strong experience providing customer service and implementing public outreach and education programs, as well as a desire to expand waste prevention, reuse, recycling, sustainability, and climate action programs. The position requires the ability to discuss a broad range of complex topics in a professional, personable, and understandable way to businesses as well as community members in residential settings (single- and multi- family housing).

The Recycling Specialist works primarily during standard office hours, with occasional evening or weekend event work. The position serves as a front-line employee, engaging with the public about their questions and complaints. Up to sixty percent of work time may be spent in the field and the remaining time will be in the office.
 
This is a full-time, non-exempt, SEIU-classified position. There is one vacancy. The classification is Support Specialist 2

Responsibilities

  1. Provide outreach, education, and technical assistance about recycling, solid waste, and sustainability/climate action in-person, and by email and phone.  

  2. Take part in community field work, including:

    • Resource deliveries, site evaluations, and other technical assistance to businesses and multifamily communities.

    • Tabling, presentations, and other outreach at community events.

  3. Provide quality customer service to community members by responding to phone and email and in person inquiries, complaints, or problems.

  4. Participate in program planning including research, compiling information, and preparing and distributing materials. 

  5. Track, detail and report on interactions and outcomes. Maintain databases and spreadsheets. 

  6. Support a variety of financial services, such as accounts payable, accounts receivable, budget monitoring, purchase orders. Review and track contract payment requests, progress payments and change orders.  

  7. Draft social media posts, track data, and provide other program support for sustainability, climate action and recycling efforts.

  8. Provide back-up staffing for the city mailroom and other general office tasks. 

  9. Travel to outreach sites using a city vehicle. 

  10. Create a workplace that promotes the organizational values of workplace diversity, equity, and inclusion.

  11. Actively promote a work environment respectful of living and working in a multicultural society.

  12. Perform duties outlined in the Support Specialist 2 classification and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED, and

  • Three years of general office experience; and

  • Some experience in recycling, waste or sustainability and/or public outreach and education.  

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience enabling the incumbent to perform the essential functions of the position.

Licensing and special requirements

  • Valid driver’s license and ability to meet the city’s driving standards.

  • Ability to pass reference checks and satisfy the requirements of a background check.

  • Ability to satisfy the requirements of a pre-employment drug screen.

Compensation

Wage range: $23.34 - $31.27 hourly

Starting rate will be determined depending on relevant work experience as outlined in the Equal Pay Act. New hires who meet minimum requirements will start at step one. Higher steps may be offered to those who have additional years of directly related experience to the position within the posted wage range.
