POSITION SUMMARY:

If so, you might be a great candidate to
join Metro's Recycling Information Center team as a temporary Recycling Specialist. We're looking for a new team member who will help people in the Portland region find the information they need to recycle, prevent waste and have a healthy home, yard and garden.
 
As a Recycling Specialist for the Recycling Information Center you will work closely with other team members who are passionate about assisting the public and handle more than 80,000 information referral phone calls each year. The majority of your time will be spent speaking on the phone with residents from across the greater Portland region as you connect them with businesses and organizations that provide recycling services and support reuse of products and materials. You will also teach people about ways they can prevent waste in their homes and businesses. You will also provide customer service support by taking phone calls for Metro's recycled latex paint product, MetroPaint, as well as for customers of our Metro Central and Metro South transfer stations and hazardous waste facilities. Your work will be performed using a database and MS Office suite software. Knowledge of and experience in recycling and waste reduction education is preferred. Supervision is received from the Recycling Information Center program supervisor.
 
This temporary position is a great opportunity for people who currently work or seek a fairly flexible work schedule. Hours are inconsistent, but are typically weekday, Saturdays, and occasional holiday hours.
 
Multiple hires may be made from this applicant pool.
 
Temporary Recycling Specialists fill in as needed to cover vacations, leaves, meetings and high volumes of calls due to promotional campaigns and seasonal variation. Two temporary positions are currently available. We anticipate considering candidates from this applicant pool when additional recycling specialist positions become available. Temporary employees may not work more than 1040 hours in a 12 month period. Temporary employees in this position typically work approximately 400-500 hours in a 12 month period.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • One year of customer service, administrative and/or clerical experience involving extensive public contact over the phone, and

  • A High school diploma or GED, or

  • Any combination of education and experience which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the job.

Schedule: fill in as needed Monday through Saturday (between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.) to cover vacations, leaves, meetings, high volumes of calls due to promotional campaigns and seasonal variation, and short-notice fill-in for illness coverage. 

  • Experience in the garbage and recycling system is preferred.
